Mar 18, 2024
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia has developed a draft Government decree on the rules for mandatory labeling of canned food. This project is published on the portal regulation.gov.ru . The public discussion will last until April 10, 2024. Canned fish will be the first to be affected by mandatory labeling.

The Ministry proposes to begin the introduction of mandatory labeling of canned food from fishermen, to whom the new requirement can be extended as early as December 1, 2024, follows from the document reviewed sfra.fm . According to Agro and Food communications, this means that from December 1 of this year all canned fish will have to be labeled, and the data will be transmitted to the Honest Mark system. Customs authorities are allowed to release unmarked products for domestic consumption or re-import within a month from the date of introduction of mandatory labeling, if it was purchased before that date. Products released before this date can be sold before the expiration date.

From March 1, 2025, labeling will start for all other canned food manufacturers. From October 1, 2026, labeling can be extended to the entire sales chain, including retail. Products under the following HS codes will be subject to labeling: 1604 (except 1604 31 000 0, 1604 32 001 0) — ready—made or canned fish; sturgeon caviar and its substitutes made from fish eggs (with the exception of sturgeon caviar and salmon caviar); 1605 - ready-made or canned crustaceans, mollusks and others aquatic invertebrates.
